So…basically you all need to be up on this man because he is the truth. I first got introduced to GLC through the A-Trak produced “Chi State of Mind” in Spring 2006 and I have to say that that was the soundtrack to my time in Spain. When Julia and I took our trip to Barcelona I could not stop playing that song because here was a rapper that was actually spitting something heartfelt where it felt genuine and the video that went along with it just showed a dude from around the way living life with home video footage etc. He wasn’t trying to glamorize it, but it was a beautiful video because of that, and since then he’s only stepped it up with every move. The main man Will aka DJ Caps over El Stence did an interview with GLC awhile back for The Fader that only reaffirmed his position: dude’s got next. He’s currently signed to Kanye’s G.O.O.D Music imprint, having known Kanye since they were 15. He appears on “Spaceship” and “Drive Slow”, and is coming out with some new heat that I can only assume is in preparation for his album. Check out his new video for “I Tried” feat Crucial Conflict:
I went to see Juana Molina at La Trastienda in San Telmo here in Buenos Aires tonight with Shoichi-San, our new friend from Osaka, Japan who is putting us onto all kinds of stuff. It was my first time seeing her live show. For those of you who are reading / hearing her name for the first time her music (despite defying description) could I guess best be characterized as ambient folktronica. She has a really incredible voice and arranges all her music live with sampler pedals and various keyboards / drum pads while playing the acoustic guitar and singing. Her newest album Son came out last year and despite initially fighting to be recognized as a singer having started out as an actress on Argentine and Latin television, she has now left an indelible mark on contemporary folk music that will not soon be forgotten. You can listen to a bunch of her music over at her official website in the downloads section.
Gotta love the description of her talking about buying the two sampler pedals for the first time…
Meanwhile tomorrow I’m heading to Mar del Plata until Wednesday to finish shooting the new Manta Raya video, so posts might be a little light…
